The 19th century Washington headquarters of US Treasury Department has secured LEED Gold from the US Green Building Council.
The building incorporates a host of eco-friendly measures such as high-performance heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The design of the facility allows optimum penetration of natural light, thereby reaping energy cost cuts. It has also made use of green cleaning and landscaping methods, upgraded its utility metering, imbibed recycling programmes, and utilised its office area in a more efficient manner. Encouragement of alternative transport boosts the green initiative.
The sustainable measures employed by the facility have helped in reaping 43% in potable water savings, and slashed electrical consumption by 7%. The green measures have also reduced steam usage by 53% while creating 164 additional workstations inside the building.
